John Stafford ran for Washington State Senate in the 37th Legislative District in 2014. The Seattle Times Editorial Board endorsed Pramila Jayapal in this race, but wrote that John Stafford’s “…substantive knowledge of policy is head and shoulders above the rest of the field.”

"I worked with John Stafford for 7 years at Strategic Planning Associates, a management consulting firm specializing in corporate strategy. As a partner with the firm, John worked for the senior management of a variety of Fortune 500 firms in a range of industries. He was an outstanding consultant, and his consulting experience will be invaluable in effectively dealing with the economic and business policy challenges of Washington State."

"John Stafford has a deep understanding of public policy in Washington State. He writes regularly for The South Seattle Emerald about topics ranging from affordable housing to climate change to Washington's regressive tax code. I appreciate his thoughtful, careful analysis of Washington State politics and the complex issues and challenges that we face. John and I worked together on the 37th District Executive Board and the King County Legislative Action Committee and he and I currently serve together on the steering committee for the South Seattle Climate Action Network. John is respectful, thoughtful, and trustworthy and I am endorsing him because I know that he will work to try and create a fair and just society, to protect vulnerable populations and to protect our environment."
-Anne Miller, Steering Committee Member, South Seattle Climate Action Network
I endorse John Stafford for state senate. I feel strongly that John’s experience as a teacher in Seattle Public Schools, in some of our less affluent neighborhoods, gives him critical on-the-ground experience to know what Seattle families face day-to-day making ends meet and giving children the excellent start in life they deserve. John has written many articles about the legislature and demonstrated insight into how that body works and how one might leverage different issues to build coalitions to get things done. Finally, John and I worked together to form WaDEC, the Washington Democratic Environmental Caucus. Together we have worked to elevate Climate Change as an issue within the Democratic party and with voters. I found John amazing to work with, insightful on the issues, organized and a great listener. John is compassionate, knowledgeable and practical, I believe he will make a great and dedicated state Senator.
